Installing Microsoft 365 on a Mac

All LSE students and staff are eligible for free copies of Microsoft 365 software on 5 desktop (PCs or Macs) and 5 mobile devices.

Using your LSE email address and password, you can log into Microsoft 365 and download Microsoft 365 software onto your personal devices. The Microsoft 365 suite includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams.

You'll be eligible to use this automatically updated, subscription-based software for the duration of the time you are at LSE.

When you log on to Microsoft 365 you will see all the Apps.

To install Microsoft 365 locally onto your computer:

  1. Click on Install Office

  2. The Microsoft 365 installer package (.pkg file) will begin to download.

  3. Once the installer .pkg file has downloaded you can open Finder, go to Downloads, and double-click Microsoft Office installer.pkg file (the name might vary slightly) to start the installation.

  4. On the first installation screen, select Continue to begin the installation process.

  5. Review the software license agreement, and then click Continue. Select Agree to agree to the terms of the software license agreement.

  6. You may see a screen prompting you to select the destination disk for the installation. If so, select the disk and click Continue.

  7. In the next screen you can change your install location, or choose specific Microsoft 365 apps to download.

  8. To only install specific Microsoft 365 apps and not the entire suite, click the Customise button and uncheck the programs you don't want.

    Click Install to continue.

  9. Enter your Mac admin password, if prompted, and then click Install Software.

  10. The software will begin to install.

  11. Click Close when the installation is finished.

  12. Your apps will be ready to use.

Activate Microsoft 365 on the Mac

When you open your first Microsoft 365 app you will be required to activate the licence. You will need to be online to activate Microsoft 365 and to authenticate your sign in.

  1. Click on an app, such as Word. Click Get started.

  2. Click Sign In to activate Microsoft 365.

  3. Enter your LSE email address and click Next.

  4. Type in your password and click Next

  5. If you have enabled multi-factor authentication (MFA) you will be prompted to verify your sign in

  6. Once verified, you can start using your app.
