Maps: Access to main LSE buildings and their facilities

The LSE campus comprises approximately twenty buildings situated on public streets. Most of the buildings are old and labyrinthine, with many possible routes from one place to another and several entrances and exits. Teaching, learning and research take place all over the campus. The campus is right in the heart of a diverse and lively area of London. Although most buildings are accessible, routes are sometimes neither direct nor convenient and access to toilets varies from building to building.

There is a programme of building work, phased over three years, to increase accessibility, following an access audit of the campus in 2001.

Main/Old Building (A) has the following facilities:

Notes About Entry to Building:

  1. Access very difficult through Houghton Street entrance.
  2. Access via adapted entrance from Portugal Street.

Notes About Circulation Inside Building

  1. Main stairwell area satisfactory via lift access with the exception of level 2/3 mezzanine.
  2. Hoist links to IT room level 2 and to Connaught House level 2.
  3. At Portugal Street end, narrow lift and adjacent corridors.

Notes Special Facilities Inside Building:

  1. Automatic doors from Portugal Street entrance.
  2. Adapted lavatories.
  3. Hoists.
  4. Braille in lifts.
  5. Induction loop in Old Theatre.

Columbia House (B) has the following facilities:

  1. Access very difficult: requires negotiating 2 x 150mm steps.

Notes About Circulation Inside Building

  1. Lift: wheelchair access not exceeding width of 650mm.
  2. Narrow corridor and heavy security doors.

Clare Market (C) has the following facilities:
